Henry Glassie (1941- ) was born in Washington D.C. and raised by his grandparents during the second world war.  He attributes his career in folklore to growing up in the rich historical setting provided by his grandmother's farm, a piece of land granted to his family by the king of England.  His work on Folk Housing of Middle Virginia set the precedent for structural studies of architecture.  It went on to influence folklorists and archaeologists alike.
