James Deetz (1930-2000) was among the “New Archaeologists” of the 1960s, yet was one that was not hesitant to break with the trend when he found reason to do so. Much of his research was grounded in Structuralism and he became an advocate for its use in archaeology. Deetz is perhaps best known for his work as a historical archaeologist at Plymouth Colony and for his seriation study of New England gravestones.
